Teetotalers may still dominate Utah liquor board

Salt Lake City - Utah has a well-earned reputation for having quirky liquor laws that make getting a drink here a little more difficult than most places.

Despite recent efforts to change that perception, it appears one quirk isn't going anywhere. Decisions on booze-related issues are now made by a board whose majority is teetotalers.

And it looks like that's not an issue for new Gov. Gary Herbert, whose two nominees to the state liquor board would leave the panel in control of those who don't drink.

Herbert spokeswoman Angie Welling says the governor didn't ask the applicants whether they drink alcohol before nominating them.

Control of the liquor board by those who don't use the products they're regulating is an ongoing annoyance for bar and restaurant owners in this heavily Mormon state.
