Will register FIR against 'Shifu Sunkriti' founder: Mumbai police tells HC

Mumbai -- Mumbai police on Wednesday told the Bombay high court that it would register an FIR against Sunil Kulkarni, the founder of Shifu Sunkriti based on a complaint by a Malad couple that their two daughters were "ensnared" by the group. A division bench of Justices Ranjit More and Anuja Prabhudessai asked the crime branch not to take the issue "lightly" and carry out proper investigations. "The allegations and complaints by the parents are indeed very serious," said the bench.

In their complaint, the Malad-based chartered accountant and his wife had alleged that the group which operates on social media was a "sex and drugs racket". The couple had claimed that their daughters had come under the influence of one Sunil Kulkarni, who has a slew of cases against him, including a sexual assault case.

According to the couple, their 23-year-old daughter - a law student - first came in contact with Sunil Kulkarni, who claimed to be a doctor and psychiatrist in December 2015. Kulkarni, the complaint claimed, runs a group called "Shifu Sunkriti". Subsequently, their younger daughter - a 21 year old architecture student - was also pulled into the group, they alleged. The parents claimed that the behaviour of their daughters changed and it came to a point where complaints were filed against the couple accusing them of wrongfully confining the girls and domestic violence. The girls finally left the house early this year. "Kulkarni attracts girls in the age group of 18-25 years and captures their mind to such an extent that they cannot possibly think beyond him," the petition said. Advocates Sandesh Patil and Varsha Bhogle, counsel for the parents, told the court that Kulkarni had criminal antecedents, with a string of cases registered against him in Delhi, including a case under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act of sexually assaulting a minor girl.

Shifu Sunkriti, the petitioners claimed, was "sex and drug racket", that contacts young girls on Facebook and other social media. "Kulkarni has a network of followers on the lookout for new vulnerable victims for him to prey on and to exploit," the petition said. "Despite complaints to the police and even senior officers no FIR was registered," said advocate Patil.
