Pastor who fleeced flock is going to prison

KMOX CBS News, St. Louis/February 4, 2011

The former Pastor of Parker Road Baptist Church in north St. Louis County is sentenced in federal court to prison for fraud.

Pastor Danny O'Guin as sentenced to eight months in prison for a scheme to get loans from church members totaling more than $100,000. Loans he didn't pay back.

Church members said O'Guin would borrow money and ask them to not tell anyone about the loan. Then, according to the indictment, O'Guin was borrowing from one parishioner to repay another. He would also allegedly repay loans with checks with mistakes on them or checks that would bounce .

What's not clear is why he did it. The U.S. Attorney's office tells KMOX the plea agreement states only that O'Guin spent the money on "his own personal use." It does not reveal what O'Guin spent the money on.

The 62 year old O'Guin was also ordered to pay back over $100,000, after he gets out of prison.

Before serving at Parker Road, O'Guin was pastor of Tower Grove Baptist Church in St. Louis for a decade. He was also an elected trustee of North American Missouri board of the Southern Baptist Convention in 1999 and in 2003. O'Guin also charged the Missouri Baptist Convention's credentials committee in 2008, according to the Associated Baptist Press.
