Boston -- The Archdiocese of Boston announced on Sunday that it placed a local reverend on administrative leave following an allegation of sexual abuse of a child.

The allegation against the Rev. John M. Mendicoa was alleged to have occurred in the 1980s.

Mendicoa is a Parochial Vicar at Sacred Heart Parish in Roslindale. He was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the preliminary investigation.

The Archdiocese said they immediately notified law enforcement who are involved in the investigation.

“I recognize that news of this allegation may be a source of distress for many people,” stated Cardinal Seán P. O’Malley. “My prayers and concern are with all people who are impacted by this matter. I remain committed to doing everything possible to protect our children, while at the same time furthering the healing process and rebuilding trust.”

Through its Office of Pastoral Support and Outreach, the Archdiocese said they continue to make counseling available to survivors, their families and parishes impacted by clergy sexual abuse.
