Hingham Woman Charged In Scam

Hingham, Massachusetts -- Police say a self-proclaimed psychic told a 69-year-old woman that the only way to lift a curse on her was for the woman to pay her $16,000, our news partner, the Patriot Ledger reported.

Tiffany Crystal Smith, 24, of 49 Whiting St., Hingham, allegedly told the woman from Pembroke that if she didn't pay the money, someone in the woman's family would commit suicide. The Pembroke woman paid Smith $7,000 before she went to family members who told police.

Hingham police arrested Smith, who was known to clients as "Sophie," on Saturday at her home which doubled as her psychic reading business.

Police said Smith told the woman there was a curse and a black cloud over her. Police say the Pembroke woman gave Smith an antique ring worth $500 and a check for $7,000.

Police said Smith told the woman to sell personal items, borrow the money, or bring a credit card to come up with the $9,000.

The alleged victim's family contacted police last week.

Smith will be arraigned Tuesday in Hingham District Court on two counts of larceny over $250, larceny over $250 by false pretenses, larceny from a person over 65 and conspiracy.
