Man arrested after videotaping Shawano mayor's house

Green Bay Press Gazette, Wisconsin/December 5, 2008

Shawano - A man associated with a sect suspected of putting together a hit list of residents and local leaders was arrested after videotaping the mayor's home.

Shawano police responded Wednesday afternoon to the home of Mayor Lorna Marquardt after her husband noticed a suspicious vehicle parked outside and a man with a camera videotaping their home, said Shawano Police Chief Ed Whealon. The mayor was not home at the time.

Officers arrested the man later that day at a Shawano gas station owned by the Samanta Roy Institute of Science and Technology on an outstanding worthless check warrant out of St. Croix County.

Samanta Roy, a nonprofit group, is under investigation by the Shawano Police Department and the FBI after a member of the group put together a written threat against 60 people in the community. Marquardt said she was on the list.

Whealon said the arrested man has posted videos about the group on YouTube, an Internet video site.

The case remains under investigation.
