Secrets in Shawano: S.I.S.T. loses $190,000 Federal lawsuit

WSAW News, Wisconsin/September 26, 2008

The Samanta Roy Institute of Science and Technology and two of its subsidiaries have been ordered in Federal Court to pay $190,000 for bills unpaid by the USA International Raceway.

Court records show the Dr. RC Samanta Roy Institute of Science in Technology, Midwest Amusement Park, LLC, US Acquisitions & Oil, Inc, and Kal Gronvall are named as defendants in the case, which was filed by MMG Financial Corporation.

Thomas Wickham Schmidt, a Green Bay-based attorney representing MMG, tells NewsChannel 7 the USA International Raceway in Shawano, a property of SIST, had failed to pay $90,000 for 24 go-karts purchased in 2005.

MMG sued in August of 2006, and the 2-year case ended with a jury trial last week. The defendants were ordered to pay the $90,000 unpaid bill, with 2% per month interest.

Alan Eisenberg represented the defendants in the case. Eisenberg is also representing SIST and Kal Gronvall as defendants in a lawsuit filed by Shawano Mayor Lorna Marquardt. The Mayor is suing for defamation, after publications by Kal Gronvall calling the mayor racist and comparing her to Hitler. That case was filed in February of 2007, and is scheduled for a Jury trial in August of 2009.

Other properties owned by SIST and its subsidiaries in Shawano have also been struggling to pay real estate, property, and room taxes. The City of Shawano tells NewsChannel 7 $12,000 in property taxes were paid this week. However, about $35,000 of room taxes remain unpaid to the City. Additionally, according to the Shawano County Clerk, SIST and it's subsidiaries now owe more than $271,000 in unpaid real estate taxes to Shawano County. Licenses to sell beer, liquor, soda, cigarettes, and operate amusement devices have not renewed for a number of the properties, and will not be released until taxes are caught up.
