Holy Ghosts starts tonight at the Ring

Miami Herald, February 18, 1999

The Jerry Herman Ring Theatre at the University of Miami starting tonight will present Holy Ghosts, a portrait of a Southern Pentecostal snake-handling cult. The production has had successful runs off-off Broadway and in leading regional theaters.

The play, by Romulus Linney, blends dark humor and poignancy as it probes into the circumstances and stories of the cult members. The story deals with a man seeking to retrieve his runaway wife. He catches up to her at a rural meeting house of a Pentecostal sect whose snake-handling service is about to begin. But the man's wife is unwilling to forsake the love and protection of her new love, the Rev. Obediah Buckhorn, the cult's minister.

Holy Ghosts is directed by George Contini and will feature guest actor Peter Haig.
