Doomsday cult bunker blown up

Russia Today/May 20, 2008

Work to demolish a cave, where the doomsday cult members took refuge, has been completed in Russia's Penza region. The authorities have carried out two controlled explosions.

Regional prosecutors say the decision to demolish the cave was made after investigations there had been completed.

The bunker became home to 35 sect members, including children, who barricaded themselves in last November waiting for the end of the world. They threatened to blow themselves up if they were forced to the surface.

During the time spent underground, two women died and the rest left the cave voluntarily in groups after weeks of negotiations.

Examinations of the bunker, carried out later, deemed it unfit for habitation.
