Are Katie and Tom on the Way Out? Gossip Column Says So

WTOL 11 News (Toledo, OH)/January 5, 2006

Toledo -- Could the impending marriage of Tom Cruise and Toledo's Katie Holmes be on the rocks? A celebrity fashion and gossip magazine on newsstands Thursday says it might be.

"Life & Style Weekly" magazine says in its January 16th issue that Tom and Katie were in Toledo over the Christmas holiday, but left early after some sort of verbal confrontation between Cruise and Martin Holmes, Katie's father. The magazine's gossip columnist says Holmes spelled out several reasons why he's opposed to Tom and Katie's relationship, including her pregnancy and Tom's belief in Scientology.

According to the article, a spokesman for the Cruise denied the reports. Count on News 11 to follow the relationship as it develops.

43-year-old Cruise and 26-year-old Holmes went public with their romantic relationship in April of 2005. The Notre Dame graduate and former star of television's "Dawson's Creek" says she grew up with a poster of Cruise on her bedroom wall and wanted to marry him. They announced their engagement in June. No wedding date has been announced.

The couple announced in October that Holmes is pregnant. Cruise has two children, Connor, 10, and Isabella, 12, that he adopted during his previous marriage to Nicole Kidman. Cruise was also previously married to Mimi Rogers, and dated Penelope Cruz for several years. Holmes and actor Chris Klein recently called off their engagement, after dating for five years.

"I feel great. [Being pregnant] is so beautiful. I've never been so happy. I'm beaming," said Holmes in an interview broadcast in October.

In preparation, Holmes said she and Cruise are putting together a baby room and that she's learning how to knit. It would be Holmes' first child.

Cruise told Barbara Walters in an interview in November that he'd bought his own sonogram so he and Katie could watch their baby growing inside her belly.

That drew a sharp response from the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography, that said Cruise should leave sonograms to the experts. The society is worried that Cruise will do something wrong to hurt the fetus. It says "reading the manufacturer's manual or having a one-hour orientation is not sufficient."

Cruise was in the news in December when British movie fans named him the "most irritating actor in Hollywood." Cruise was found to be more annoying than Jennifer Lopez, Julia Roberts, Adam Sandler or Jim Carrey in the survey by Britain's "Empire" magazine. They talked to 10,000 movie fans.

But while Cruise may annoy them off camera, they still like his movies. They also named him the "greatest movie star of all time."
