Deviant sect leader believed doomsday was on Dec 21, 2012

The Star, Malaysia/January 10, 2013

Jasin: The world was to end on Dec 21 last year, according to the 46-year-old leader of a deviant sect now under police detention.

Malacca police chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Chuah Ghee Lye said when the world did not end, some of the sect's followers became disillusioned and left.

He told a press conference on Thursday that the man from Muar, Johor, had admitted to being the founder of the Panji Langit sect and had been living in the bungalow at Kampung Chabau with his family.

After weeks of surveillance, police raided the bungalow in Simpang Bakoh on Saturday and found dozens of swords, keris, axes, machetes, 308 types of bows and arrows, spears, and 23 canisters of gunpowder.

The weapons were supposed to be used in preparation for the doomsday.

Preliminary investigations showed the man was not linked to any militant movements.

Police are tracking down 30 of the group's followers to help in the investigations.

SAC Chuah said the man has been remanded until Saturday.
