A woman's role at The Assembly

March 2002
By a former member of the Geftakys Assembly

As with many conservative Christian churches, a woman's role in "The Assembly" is often one of submissiveness and subjection. This can be seen in the fact that women never take on any leadership roles, which includes; giving announcements, teaching bible studies and/or giving direction of any kind in a public setting.

These practices are constantly reinforced by the teachings at Assembly bible studies and other meetings. If another church, outside of The Assembly, acts differently their practice will then be the focus of ridicule. You might hear, "Did your know they have a woman pastor?" "How unscriptural!"

Yet, while I was a member of the Assembly the rules governing a woman's role seemed greatly relaxed, when it came to Betty Geftakys. Early on I was told, "Go ask Betty!" And "She will give you direction on how to handle your marriage." I attended meetings where she was the key note speaker to groups of brothers. I've heard that she has even publicly rebuked men during leadership meetings.

When I reflect on my time at the Assembly it has become increasingly clear that many of the doctrines, we as members were so zealously taught, do not necessarily apply to the Geftakys family.
