Priest jailed for raping boys

News Limited, Australia/September 17, 2007

A Catholic priest who raped and sexually abused four boys over 10 years has been jailed for seven years.

Terrence Melville Pidoto, 62, was found guilty in July in the Victorian County Court of 11 charges including rape, indecent assault and buggery.

Pidoto, who had pleaded not guilty, carried out his crimes at several Melbourne locations, including a seminary, between 1972 and 1984, the court was told.

Today Judge Ross Howie said Pidoto's actions were "a shocking betrayal of your vocation".

"You were an educated adult in a position of power and influence - you dishonoured that position of trust," Judge Howie told him.

Pidoto was sentenced to seven years and three months, and will serve at least five years before being eligible for parole.

He will also be listed on Victoria's sex offenders register.
